County EMA to partner with American Red Cross
Charlotte Boynton
Lincoln County Emergency Management Agency Director Tim Pellerin told
the commissioners at their meeting Tuesday morning his agency and the
American Red Cross are co-sponsoring several workshops in Lincoln
County.
The purpose of the training, provided by the American Red Cross, is to
give participants the knowledge, and skills required to operate a
successful shelter.
Pellerin told the commissioners the Red Cross just doesn't have the
staff to operate all the shelters that would be required in the event of a
disaster; however, they are willing to train volunteers who would be
willing to work in these shelters.
In the event of a disaster the volunteers who take this training would
be able to assist with the special needs population also. Lynn Orne, the
county's Special Needs Coordinator, told the commissioners that statistics
show there is one special needs person in every four households.
People who wish to participate are required to fill out a
pre-registration form. The workshops are free and open to the public.
Anyone who is high school age or older is eligible.
It is an eight-hour class. Two of the workshops will be divided into
two classes of four hours each, and another one will be an eight-hour
class.
The workshops will be held in Boothbay, Jefferson and Wiscasset. The
two four-hour classes will run from 6 to 10 p.m. The eight-hour class will
begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 5 p.m.
The Boothbay classes will be March 31, and April 3, at the Boothbay
Fire Station. The classes in Jefferson will be held April 8 and April 14
at the Jefferson Fire Station. The Wiscasset eight-hour class will be held
Saturday, April 12, at the Lincoln County Communications Conference
Center.
Orne said she is also planning a class in the Waldoboro-Damariscotta
area as well.
Light refreshments will be provided for the evening classes and lunch
will be provided for the Saturday class.
The registration forms will be available at the town offices or by
contacting Orne at 633-6405, or by her e-mail

The commissioners accepted resignations at their meeting from two
county employees.
District Attorney Geoffrey Rushlau asked the commissioners to accept
the resignation of Amy Burnham with regret. Recycling Supervisor Mike
Thompson asked the commissioners to accept the resignation of Gerald
Bailey, a mechanic truck driver at the recycling center.
Burnham has accepted a position with the Volunteers of America in
Lincoln County.
Rushlau and Thompson will advertise to fill the positions.
Thompson reported revenues for the recycling center this past month
were $24,250,00, and revenue this year to date is $44,500, about $6,000
above last year at this time.
Chief Deputy Kenneth Mason told the commissioners Lincoln County had 29
inmates at the Two Bridges Regional Jail compared to the Sagadahoc County
inmate count at 42.
Lincoln County has 20 male inmates on the county diversion program and
14 inmates on the Volunteers of America program.
The commissioners discussed briefly with Mason the open space at the
old jail. Commissioner Sheridan Bond commented that perhaps the county
should have an engineer look at the space and see how best it could be
used to benefit the county.
The commissioners took no vote following an executive session Tuesday
morning citing MRSA 405, 6A which relates to: "A discussion or
consideration of the employment, appointment, assignment, duties,
promotion, demotion, compensation, evaluation, discipline, resignation or
dismissal of an individual."
