Chewonki gearing up for spring camp

The Chewonki Foundation announces open enrollment for its upcoming school vacation week with great indoor and outdoor activities for kids. Programs will be offered throughout April vacation week (April 21-25) on Chewonki's 400-acre campus and inside its modern, comfortable Center for Environmental Education.

Events and activities are designed to be fun and educational and are geared for children in grades 1 through 8. Some of the activities include building cameras and solar cookers, climbing on the indoor ropes course, seeing live animal presentations, and exploring nature in the springtime on the beautiful Chewonki campus.

All programs are instructed by Chewonki's experienced naturalists and teachers. Enrollment is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The schedule is as follows:

Chickadees (Grades 1-4)

Monday - Arts and Crafts with Nature and Photography, Create natural sculptures in the forest and learn to take pictures with your homemade pinhole camera!

Tuesday - All About Bugs , Explore our ponds, go on a spring bug hunt, and see our live Bugs presentation.

Wednesday - Trip to Reid State Park, Explore tide pools, go birding, have a picnic, and play on the beach. Also, reconstruct a whale skeleton in our Fins and Flippers presentation.

Thursday - All About Animals , Go on a rove, learn about spring animal tracking, and meet non-releasable raptors, mammals, snakes, and other live animals our Animal Lab.

Friday - Farm Day , Learn about farm animals while visiting Chewonki's working farm. Also, make homemade ice cream!

Falcons (Grades 5-8)

Monday - Outdoor Survival Skills

Tuesday - Indoor High Ropes Course and Solar Day, Climb on an indoor ropes course that includes 11 individual climbs! Harness and collect the sun's energy by building solar cookers. Take your solar cooker home with you!

Wednesday - Field Trip to Reid State Park, Explore tide pools, go birding, have a picnic, and play on the beach. Also, reconstruct a whale skeleton in our Fins and Flippers presentation.

Thursday - Farm Day, Learn about farm animals while visiting Chewonki's working farm. Also, make homemade ice cream!

Thursday Overnight -- Sleep in a wood-heated yurt, cook dinner over an open fire, go on a night hike, and learn about astronomy!

Friday -- Ravine Crossing and Animal Day, Cross the Gulch with ropes and a harness. Go on a rove, learn about spring animal tracking, and meet non-releasable raptors, mammals, snakes, and other live animals in our Animal Lab.

The Chewonki Foundation is a nonprofit educational institution established in 1962 and located on a 400-acre peninsula in Wiscasset, Maine. Chewonki is dedicated to helping people grow individually and in community with others by providing educational experiences that foster an understanding and appreciation of the natural world. Chewonki's leaders challenge participants both physically and intellectually with activities that build self-confidence, a sense of community, and a greater awareness of the inter- relatedness of the world around us. The Chewonki Foundation offers summer camp programs; wilderness trips for teenagers and adults; residential, school-year environmental education programs; traveling lessons in natural science to schools; and a residential semester program of academic study for 11th grade students.
