MDOT to meet with Edgecomb officials

Members of the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) will meet with Edgecomb officials prior to the Wiscasset Bypass Task Force meeting Thursday, March 20 to update the state on traffic changes created by new and future proposed development.

"MDOT information on Edgecomb is outdated," Selectman Jo Cameron said. "They need to be aware of what is going on."

Edgecomb officials requested the meeting because MDOT was unaware of the development on Davis Island, including the workforce housing, with 26 units, and the proposed assisted living complex.

Ed Hanscom, transportation analyst for MDOT, has asked for more information on the assisted living complex, such as a site plan, or access points planned for the development.

The meeting in Edgecomb at the town hall is scheduled for 3 p.m. The Wiscasset Bypass Task Force meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Wiscasset Communications Conference Room.

The Edgecomb selectmen approved and issued a blasting permit to Maine Drilling and Blasting at their meeting Monday evening. The company's Chris Gleason told the selectmen the permit is to blast between 90 and 120 cubic feet on Davis Island.

According to the town blasting ordinance, blasting permits are to be approved and issued by the selectmen instead of the code enforcement officer (CEO). The process was explained to Dabney Lewis, the town's CEO, by the selectmen.

The selectmen voted to pay Lewis $250 for eight hours of "windshield" inspections of permits that have been issued over the past two years.

Cameron not seeking re-election

Selectman Jo Cameron has announced she will not seek re-election this year when her term runs out in May. Lee Smith, tax collector in Edgecomb will not seek re-election this year either.

The town elections will be held May 16, and the annual town meeting will be held May 17.

According to Cameron, Debbie Boucher will seek the tax collector's position, and Jack Sarmanian will run for the open selectman's seat.

Planning board public hearing

The Edgecomb planning board will hold a public hearing Thursday, March 20 to discuss the amendments to the Land Use Ordinance at 6 p.m. prior to the planning board regular meeting at 6:30
