Wendy Pieh to receive award
Bonnie Gerrard
Submitted By Bonnie Gerrard
Lincoln County Democrats
Lincoln County Democrats will honor Representative Wendy Pieh of Bremen, District 50, on March 29 with the Frances Perkins Award.
The award, given bi-annually, celebrates the spirit of Frances Perkins, who served for 12 years as Secretary of the Department of Labor and was the first woman to serve in a cabinet position in the United States.
Although Perkins lived most of her life outside of Maine, her family home is in Newcastle, and she is buried with other members of her family in the cemetery on River Road in Newcastle. Perkins initiated some of the programs of the New Deal, including the Minimum Wage Laws, Social Security, the National Labor Relations Act, and the Civilian Conservation Corps.
The selection of Pieh for this year's award is especially appropriate because it recognizes Representative Pieh's own commitment to labor and economic concerns. She serves as Chair of the Legislature's Joint Standing on Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. Pieh and her husband own and operate a farm raising cashmere goats in Bremen. In the past she worked with Upward Bound and traveled all over the world with similar educational leadership programs.
Guest speaker for the evening will be Attorney General Steve Rowe. It will be held at the VFW Hall in Waldoboro.
A social hour begins at 5:30 p.m.. A cash bar of wine only will be offered. There will be a charge of $20 per person. For further information and reservations contact Betsy Wooster, P.O. Box 303, Waldoboro, ME 04572, 832-7764, betsywooster @gmail. com . |
