Wiscasset Senior Center
Last Wednesday's Community Dinner was a bit more elegant with white tablecloths. Steve has some cloth table covers and napkins and we will be using these in the future. Sure it will make it all very elegant but it will also save on the use of paper items. Paper napkins, paper placemats and other paper goods are skyrocketing in price. Washing the cloth table covers and napkins will be more cost effective. You too can help cut costs by using only what you need. Remember that it saves to use a china cup or plate and then wash it rather then a paper plate or foam cup and then toss it. Next Wednesday we will be having our first cookout of the spring season. Steve will be firing up the grill and cooking some steak and chicken. There will a variety of salads available along with the normal snacks before the meal. So come out and celebrate spring and bring a friend! There will be a medication collection for unused, unwanted or outdated prescriptions, OTC drugs and Veterinary drugs on Saturday, April 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Locations will be The Boothbay Harbor Town Hall and Spectrum Generations in Damariscotta. Flushing or tossing old meds is causing one of the newest pollution problems. Also homes are being broken into by people looking for prescription drugs. For more info call Spectrum Generations at 563-1363. Spectrum Generations Online Auction is going on now and will continue until March 30. Go to ww w.spectrumgenerations.cmarket.com. There are many good items available including items from the Wiscasset Senior Center and Community Center. This week spring finally arrives. Also Easter is this coming Sunday. Spring might seem like it would never get here and even though it is here it might seem more like winter than spring. But I'm sure we all are saying Easter is early this year. And it is. In Western Christianity, Easter can fall between March 22 and April 25. So it is early. The last time it fell on March 23 was in 1913, 95 years ago. The next time Easter falls on March 23 will be in 2160, 152 years from now. The last time Easter fell on the earliest date of March 22 was in 1818 and it won't fall on March 22 again until 2285.
These were called the Ecclesiastical Full Moon dates, and they have been used ever since 326 AD to determine the date of Easter. So, the Paschal Full Moon is always the first Ecclesiastical Full Moon date after March 20 (which happened to be the vernal equinox date in 325 AD) (from Christianity.about.com) Now whether you are Christian or not, and if you are, whether you go to church every Sunday or just on Easter, I wish you Happy Easter. I hope you recognize Easter as a special day that offers blessings for all and an opportunity for all to try and make this a better world for everyone. The cribbage tournament winners on Tuesday, March 11, were Tiger Chubbuck first, Nancy Schilke second, Blanche Johnson got low score and Doc Schilke had the high hand On Thursday, March 13, the winners were Hal Thayer first, Keith Bridgham second, Keith Batcheler got low score and Linden Simmons had the high hand. Activities for next week (Reservations please! Call 882-8230 at least two days in advance for meal reservations.) Monday, March 24 - lunch, meatloaf. Tuesday, March 25 - 9:30 a.m. to noon, Cribbage.
