Wright Property Committee Propose changes in ordinances
Charlotte Boynton
It doesn't look like there will be any ordinance changes ready for the
Westport Island town meeting pertaining to the town's Harbor and
Waterfront Ordinance, according to First Selectman George Richardson.
The board had requested an update from the Harbor and Waterfront
Committee after the selectmen's meeting April 14; as of the selectmen's
meeting April 21, the board had not received any information on their
inquiry.
Westport Island Wright Property Committee has proposed a mooring
ordinance for the Back River in the vicinity of the Wright property.
In the selectmen's meeting of April 14, an e-mail from Mary Ellen
Barnes was received asking the selectmen to contact David Soule to see
what progress he has made on revisions to the town's Harbor and Waterfront
Ordinance.
This newspaper reported on Barnes' inquiry, referring to her being a
member of the history sub-committee of the conservation commission, but
neglected to say that she was inquiring as the acting chairman of the
Wright Property Committee.
In an e-mail to the newspaper, she said, "The harbormaster and the
others in town feel there is need to improve the other existing
ordinances, and our committee has met with the Harbor and Waterfront
Committee to discuss this. So you can understand that it was not as a
history committee member that I raised this question."
The Wright property on the Ferry Road was purchased by the town in 2004
for the purpose of a public boat launch facility for both recreational and
commercial use.
Over the past few years the town has received strong opposition to the
facility from some residents on the island, citing safety issues.
Currently the project is being held up by a Superior Court complaint by
three residents on the island, Paul Nergaard, Michael Sterns, and E.
Davies Allan.
