Wiscasset's 4th of July committee to meet
The Wiscasset's Fourth of July committee will meet Monday, May 5, at 6 p.m. in the municipal building hearing room.
The public is invited to attend the meeting and share ideas that will make it a celebration to remember.
As history has taught, Fourth of July, or Independence Day, is the annual celebration of the United States' Birthday. It is the date the Declaration of Independence was passed by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.
The first celebrations of the nation's birthday included bell ringing, bonfires, parades, and speeches. Feasting has always been a part of the celebrations. In the early years there were banquets. However, it has now become an outdoor event, with barbeques and picnics.
