Wiscasset Senior Center
Last Thursday was May 1 or May Day. Katie Bryant, Jo Johnson's
granddaughter brought in a bunch of May baskets for the dining tables in
memory of Jo. That was a real nice touch and very appreciated. Year after
year Jo would bring in May baskets filled with flowers and greens that she
had gathered. It was always an indication of spring and an acknowledgement
of what diverse and colorful plants grow in Maine. The memory of Jo
Johnson lives on through her granddaughter's thoughtfulness. Next Wednesday, May 14, the Wiscasset Senior Center Scholarship Fund,
Inc will be making its annual scholarship award. Over the past few months
many people have said that they hoped that the Scholarship Fund would not
disband. Support shown so far has encouraged a few Board members to try
and keep it going. Now the public has a chance to show its support for
this effort by attending the dinner next week. Your presence will show
support for these award recipients, the Wiscasset Senior Center
Scholarship Fund and all those that pursue a hands-on career. Please
remember to make a reservation no later then noon on Monday, May12. The scholarships are awarded to Wiscasset High School graduates, living
in any town served by WHS and pursuing a hands-on career. The award can be
used for technical and educational courses or tools. Wiscasset Senior
Center Scholarships are unique in offering money to further the careers of
our future carpenters, auto technicians, plumbers, restaurant chefs,
etc. The Scholarship Committee decided to award two $500 scholarships this
year. The awards will go to: Samuel C. Schmal, who plans to go into the
building construction Trade. He will be attending Northern Maine Community
College in Presque Isle this September. Nicholas Grover plans to go into the residential construction program.
