Westport Island

Despite earlier forecasts for rain, Mother's Day weekend turned out to be an absolutely breathtakingly beautiful two days. The leaves seemed to pop out overnight, especially the poplars and birches.

We had the pleasure of the company of Paul's friends Mike and Zabby Ince from Long Island for the weekend. They came to help celebrate Paul's birthday by taking him out to lunch and visiting Pemaquid Lighthouse. Paul couldn't remember when he'd last seen such a crisp and clear day.

While Paul was off on his birthday outing, I took my mom out to lunch. I know how lucky I am to still have my mom with me and it's great to see her able to get out and about so easily now that her knees have healed.

The report from the Conservation Commission was one of a successful clean up day. Several volunteers showed up to brave the bugs and restore the unspoiled look of our beautiful island roads as they gathered bags of trash to be transported to the dump.

Thank you to Nancy and Wes Bladow, Debbie Crawford, Pauline Langmaid, Sandy, Bill and Kristy Hopkins, Bob Springhorn, Dennis Dunbar, Bill Cooney, Randy Russell, Brandon Shea, Joey, Brian, Rick and Karen McGrath, Marianne Williams, Mark Cummings, Mary Ellen Barnes and Nate and Linda Whittaker.

Jay and Lori of the island store organized the food and drinks for the cook out that was put on for the volunteers. I hope people will appreciate the hard work and help keep things looking nice by putting litter where it belongs.

Speaking of Lori's place, this Thursday I'll be making homemade chicken pot pies for a special.

It's that time of year to be on the lookout for wildlife along the sides of the road again. I'm referring not only to the quick footed deer leaping about, the turkeys parading across or the occasional squirrels making a run for it. I am referring also to the slow, steady turtles that make their way across the main roads this time of year. Please be on the look out and give them a chance to make their yearly trek to and from local pond areas.

FINAL REMINDER: This Saturday, May 17 is the big day! Don't miss out on the wine and cheese meet and greet affair sponsored by the Community Association. Join everyone at the town hall from 5 to 7 p.m. and bid on one of many lovely donated items. The Community Association cannot accept more donations after Thursday morning as they are making a master list to pass out at the door.

I am including a list of donors, but it may be incomplete as they had several last minute donations. If you know of anyone left off the list, please email me!

Brad and Emily Adler; Ames Supply; Andersons Nursery; Bintliff's; Carol Blake; Blooms Flower Shop; Skip and Fran Charles; Jill Cooney; Deb Crawford; G&D Cromwell; Cromwell Coastal Properties; Mike Cromwell; Linda Davis and Richard DeVries; Fogg Framing; Halcyon Yarn Shop; Hancock Lumber; Hannaford's; Anne Harris; Deb Harrison; Charlie Howe; Judy Hughes; Kennebec Rental; King Eider's Pub; Pauline Langmaid; Ann and Bill Mackie; Maine Coast Bookstore; Mermaid Bindary; Montsweag Roadhouse; Drew and Tom Porter; Sarah Rhinelander; Sarah's Restaurant; Sea Basket; Shaw's; Sheepscott River Pottery; Ken Shepherd; Simpson's Seafood; Skillins Nursery; Clem and Georgia Sledge; Ann Springhorn; Sproul's Furniture Store; Squire Tarbox Inn; Suzi Stedman; Joan Boyd and Ted Stiles; Wendy Thompson; Treats; Suzi Whittemore; J.D. Williams; Wiscasset Ford; and Yellowfront Grocery.

One thing I didn't list last week was a beautiful antique map of Westport Island valued at about $300+. The Town Hall will be open on Friday between 4 and 6 p.m. to accept donations.

Because there are so many items to bid on, the Community Association has decided to open the Town Hall at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday so people can come in and view the items on which they would like to place a bid. When you come on Saturday to bid, please bring checks or cash as they have no capability to accept credit cards.

Remember, this auction and gathering is open to everyone and there is NO admission! If you are in need of a ride to this event, please call the Human Resource Committee, Sarah at 882-4022, Marcia at 882-6270, Linda at 882-5464, (I won't list them all!), or get in touch with me.

This Thursday, May 15, the town office will be closed during the usual 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. hours as Dedee and Susan will be attending a training workshop.

If you have an event, a business, a congratulations to someone you'd like to see in this column, please contact me at 882-9032 or pbonyun @gwi.net .
