Garden Club of Wiscasset

On June 12, The Garden Club of Wiscasset had its annual spring luncheon at Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. Forty ladies enjoyed the luncheon, catered by Simply Elegant who offered several different main dishes, salad, herb rice, bread and sweets for dessert. Some members sat on the deck outside Long Reach Hall before the luncheon was served.

There were several important announcements. The Thomas and Lansdale Gardiner Silver Bowl was awarded to Judy Hughes for her many contributions to the garden club and its projects. Each year the bowl is given to a different club member, and her name is engraved on the bowl. Nine members have been recipients, and they determine who the next year's choice will be.

The club's garden and house tour on Westport Island next Thursday, June 26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.—rain or shine - was also discussed. Tickets are $20 if purchased before June 26 and $25 if bought the day of the tour. It is also possible to pre-order a lunch for $10 prepared by the island's Squire Tarbox Inn and available for pickup that day between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The following businesses are selling both tickets now: Skillins, Now You're Cooking, Hawkes Florist, Blooms, Treats, Cottage Gardens and Boothbay Region Nursery. If you have any questions about the tour, please call Sandy Hopkins, 882-6047.

The proceeds from the tour help to fund the club's scholarship program for college students and community organizations.

This year a children's garden outside the Wiscasset Public Library's children's room will begin. Raised beds with appropriate plants, clematis to grow along the fence and new shrubs are part of the project. The club also plants flowerbeds in Wiscasset Village to enhance its look.

Westport Island is a rural, idyllic spot. Most of the gardens and houses are on the shores of the island, so the views are spectacular. This tour will be the first one held on the island in years. It provides an opportunity for everyone to enjoy the island.

The Garden Club of Wiscasset welcomes any new members. If you are interested in joining the garden club, which meets from September to June, please call President Tania Hayes, 882-7069.
