On Saturday, July 12, the Committee for Alna History and the Friends of
the Head Tide Church, are sponsoring "Historic Building Tour Day."
The public is invited to visit Alna's signature landmarks from noon to 4
p.m. This is an opportunity to see the inside of the Alna Meetinghouse, as
well as several other buildings owned by the town of Alna and listed on
the National Historic Register.
The Alna Meetinghouse, recently featured in the March issue of Antiques
Magazine, the Alna Center School, Puddle Dock School and the historic Head
Tide Church are included in the tour. Docents will be available at each
location to provide background information and answer questions.
Doreen Conboy of the Committee for Alna History says, "Alna is a small
town, rich in history. We are fortunate so many of our historic buildings
remain today. Both the Committee and the Friends of the Head Tide Church
raise money and volunteer their time to help maintain and preserve our
local heritage."
Tours begin at the Meetinghouse, which is located on Route 218 (about
seven miles north from Route 1 in Wiscasset village.) A map to the other
sites will be provided there, giving information about designated parking
areas, food and other points of interest along the way. The Alna Store,
located just north of the Meetinghouse on Route 218, is offering a
luncheon special on the 12th to celebrate the event.
To schedule a tour on July 12 for a group larger than six people please
call 586-5051. The event is free and open to the public but donations will
be gratefully accepted. For more information call 586-5051 or
586-6413.
